Marian High was founded by three Dominican Sisters in 1931 and classes were initially held in a tent and in the church to accommodate the growing number of students. The Sisters financed the school entirely and it was only later on in the school’s history that parents were asked to contribute financially. In the 1950’s / 1960’s the school began to accommodate more students from the surrounding areas and operated as a private school where parents were required to pay fees. The school continued to grow in numbers and in the 1970’s Marian was one of the first schools to open its doors and accept isiXhosa speaking learners. In 1976, the school became a state-aided school with financial support from the government. As the sisters moved out of the convent, more of the convent buildings could be used for classrooms and the chapel was converted into a school hall. Today, Marian School hosts 510 learners from Elsies River, Delft, Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Langa, Bishop Lavis, Gugulethu...

St John's is a school rich in history, extending back to 1916 when Father Luke O'Reilly bought an old tin shanty and erected it for use as a church of which a portion was utilised as the first 'non-European' school for Catholic children. Today this philosophy of equal access to education for all races is continued. St John's acknowledge that children come from diverse family backgrounds, and thus incorporates and expands on this knowledge, offering all children the chance to gain a better understanding of those around them while still acknowledging the similarities and differences. This is achieved by having an open and accessible enrolment policy, where families with diverse backgrounds and needs are all welcome. We, therefore, offer a learner-orientated environment that encourages learners' initiative, independence and self-esteem. The vision statement of St John's is 'Soaring to greater heights, ' which reminds us that we will strive to be even better and reach even highe

Holy Cross School was known as Holy Cross Mission in the early days and was the first Coloured School in the Cape. The school opened on the 24th January 1910 after four sisters set out from the Transkei to start a coloured mission here in Cape Town. Until 1920 when free education was introduced, the Sisters charged fees of one penny per week in the lower classes and 4 pence from standard four up. In 1918 a room from the neighbouring house was hired to accommodate the standard five and six learners. The numbers of learners increased progressively so that in 1933 a new building had to be erected. Imagine this: one hundred and one standard three pupils, fifty-nine boys squeezed into the passage; thirty-six girls into the Principal’s office, the lower classes were in the Sisters’ Chapel, with the sanctuary screened off by a curtain. In 1935 overcrowding was once again experienced. In 1939 a new school was opened for Sub-Standards A and B and Standard Two pupils. Finally, ...

we, at Holy Cross are committed to teaching with gospel values. Faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love. Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous, conceited or proud. Love is gentle and peaceful. This atmosphere permeates through the corridors of our school. We are a second home to all who sets foot here. We rejoice in the great advances our young democracy has made but acknowledge with pain that our country remain in need of healing. We are called to the need for justice, solidarity and the affirmation of the dignity of all, especially the "little ones". With boldness, we continue to proclaim Jesus' way of love, compassion, solidarity, forgiveness and service. We strive to be a community of care where each person's worth is nurtured. Our school was founded by courageous, committed and righteous women of the order of the Holy Cross Sisters who sacrificed their families and their lives for our community. This is our foundation, built on a solid rock, not in se

The Holy Cross Sisters arrived in South Africa as a missionary order in 1883. Their first school was established in Umtata, providing education for the disadvantaged. Their work extended further into the local community with them not only founding schools all over South Africa, but also establishing and building orphanages, hospitals and homes for the elderly where the need for these facilities existed. Many of the Sisters are also nurses and social workers who are closely involved in working in and with communities. The Sisters opened different schools in Cape Town as well as an orphanage and Teacher Training College (St. Augustine’s) . Many of these are now classified as state schools on church property. The Teacher Training College had to close in 1974 due to the enforcement of the Group Areas Act and its orphanage moved into the Cape Flats. In 1910 the Sisters decided to open a school in Maitland, starting their work in old farm buildings and developing the property over ...

St James Roman Catholic Primary is the oldest school on the False Bay coastline and over many years of existence has maintained its distinctive character as that of a community school, serving its people. Our school has a unique and interesting history, tracing its roots back to Father John Duignam. A mosaic on the present post office of St James depicts the arrival of a group of Filipino fisherman, survivors of a shipwreck, who settled there in 1840. Being devout Catholics, they needed a church closer to Simon’s Town, to which they were obliged to sail every Sunday for Mass, weather permitting. On the 5th of October 1858, the foundation stone of the first church was laid and named St James in honour of the Apostle and Fisherman, and also the Patron Saint of Spain from where the Filipino’s mother tongue came. There is evidence that a school for the fisherman’s children existed in Kalk Bay, but when Father Duignam arrived in 1874 the school was transferred to St James...
