St James Roman Catholic Primary is the oldest school on the False Bay coastline and over many years of existence has maintained its distinctive character as that of a community school, serving its people. Our school has a unique and interesting history, tracing its roots back to Father John Duignam. A mosaic on the present post office of St James depicts the arrival of a group of Filipino fisherman, survivors of a shipwreck, who settled there in 1840. Being devout Catholics, they needed a church closer to Simon’s Town, to which they were obliged to sail every Sunday for Mass, weather permitting. On the 5th of October 1858, the foundation stone of the first church was laid and named St James in honour of the Apostle and Fisherman, and also the Patron Saint of Spain from where the Filipino’s mother tongue came. There is evidence that a school for the fisherman’s children existed in Kalk Bay, but when Father Duignam arrived in 1874 the school was transferred to St James...

Marian High was founded by three Dominican Sisters in 1931 and classes were initially held in a tent and in the church to accommodate the growing number of students. The Sisters financed the school entirely and it was only later on in the school’s history that parents were asked to contribute financially. In the 1950’s / 1960’s the school began to accommodate more students from the surrounding areas and operated as a private school where parents were required to pay fees. The school continued to grow in numbers and in the 1970’s Marian was one of the first schools to open its doors and accept isiXhosa speaking learners. In 1976, the school became a state-aided school with financial support from the government. As the sisters moved out of the convent, more of the convent buildings could be used for classrooms and the chapel was converted into a school hall. Today, Marian School hosts 510 learners from Elsies River, Delft, Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Langa, Bishop Lavis, Gugulethu...

The school and church were founded on the 3rd of October, 1935, the feast day of St Theresa, the Little Flower. Initially the church building was used as the same venue for classes, and was cleaned for mass and rearranged as a classroom on Mondays. Sister Brigid, later known as Sister Vera Marie, was the first principal and was joined by two founding educators and four learners. After 1945 the school received a grant from the government and also received a free feeding scheme. The school grew with the help of Father Alban and we were very proud to introduce our first 'coloured' principal, Sister Alphons Padua in 1953. The school continued to grow and by 1969 the school was so overcrowded that Sister Mary Agnes had to let 500 learners and educators go to Vanguard Primary, however they all returned the very next day. More classrooms, as well as kindergarten classes, were built to accommodate the growing number of learners from the surrounding areas. In 1977 the late Bishop Naidoo ...

The Holy Cross Sisters saw the need to provide education opportunities for the children of the mostly fishermen who lived in the area, and in 1916, St Anthony’s R. C. Primary was established. The school which offered catholic education to the less-fortunate families in the area was aptly named after St Anthony, who is the patron saint of the poor. Saint Anthony, also known as the saint of the people, is known to be called upon through pray to intercede with God when items have been lost. (Picture of Saint Anthony holding the Christ child) Due to the Group Areas Act, the Sisters were forced to seek land elsewhere to build a new school and in 1963 the last group of children relocated to the new building in Gordon Road, Heathfield where it is currently situated. St Anthony’s prides itself on being an all-inclusive school where a diverse group of learners happily interact with each other and display a respect for all people irrespective of race, culture or religion.

St John's is a school rich in history, extending back to 1916 when Father Luke O'Reilly bought an old tin shanty and erected it for use as a church of which a portion was utilised as the first 'non-European' school for Catholic children. Today this philosophy of equal access to education for all races is continued. St John's acknowledge that children come from diverse family backgrounds, and thus incorporates and expands on this knowledge, offering all children the chance to gain a better understanding of those around them while still acknowledging the similarities and differences. This is achieved by having an open and accessible enrolment policy, where families with diverse backgrounds and needs are all welcome. We, therefore, offer a learner-orientated environment that encourages learners' initiative, independence and self-esteem. The vision statement of St John's is 'Soaring to greater heights, ' which reminds us that we will strive to be even better and reach even highe

St Agnes Primary School caters for learners from across the socio-economic spectrum. We have learners from the surrounding areas, the townships, Nazareth House – a home for HIV / AIDS children, Ons Plek – a shelter for street children and a large number of refugees from different African countries. The majority of these parents are unable to contribute financially towards school fees, but no-one is refused admission to the school. Unemployment, drug abuse, gangsterism and a decline in moral values are an enormous challenge, but we are devoted to Catholic education and are supported in our mission by a well-qualified and dedicated group of educators. St. Agnes Primary is committed to develop the potential of every learner in a Catholic environment so that they can make a meaningful contribution to this community in the spirit of ‘ubuntu’. The school strives towards total commitment in excellence through our teaching practice and empathizing with our school community through...

St. Augustine's was started at Springfield Convent in 1871 with an initial purpose of serving the local community. In 1936 the current site alongside the suburban railway was acquired as it was much more accessible to the community. By the early sixties the school was a dual-medium one, with one stream catering especially for the Afrikens speaking Catholic pupils who travelled from Hout Bay. Our school has remained popular both because of its tradition and because of its outstanding and consistent academic record. By the early 1990's the roll had stabilised at 860 learners, which was far more than the building could accommodate. Despite the tremendous transition in the education arena, and the attempt at levelling the playing fields at Government level, our pupils are still constantly reminded of the privileges which they enjoy with parallel reference to less fortunate children as far as education is concerned. Although the majority of our learners come from struggling financ
