Transmed Medical Fund was established in 1910 as a Medical Fund to aid and support the railways and harbour workers of the Union of South Africa. On the 1st February 1999 Transmed Medical Fund became a registered medical scheme in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 131 of 1998. The Council for Medical Schemes is the regulatory body for Medical Schemes Transmed is the closed Medical Scheme dedicated to employees and retired employees the State Owned Enterprises Transnet, South African Airways (Se) and The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) as well as its subsidiaries. The Fund is managed by a Board of Trustees and comprise of 12 members. The Fund provides in-hospital and out-of-hospital benefits to more than 45 000 beneficiaries.
