Tugela Mill has been in operation since 1945 and is currently the oldest purpose-built mill in the Sappi group. The mill produces pulp for its own consumption, containerboard and lignosulphonate for export. Situated in the town of Mandeni near the Tugela river in KwaZulu-Natal, the mill is located near the ports of Richards Bay and Durban (South Africa), allowing for easy access to global markets. Our emphasis at the mill is on satisfying customer needs through high levels of quality and process as well as equipment optimisation. We produce 135, 000tpa of neutral sulfite semi-chemical pulp for own consumption and with a capacity of 195, 000tpa, the no 2 paper machine produces a range of Ultraflute and Ultratest corrugating medium (liner) manufactured from recycled and virgin fibre. Established in 2012, Tugela Mill joined Sappi Biotech as a source of lignosulphonate, producing 25, 000tpa of lignosulphonate in powder form and 35, 000tpa of liquid product.

Saiccor Mill produces a world-class product in a country where sound technology and infrastructure meet the demands of the global community. Situated 50km south of the port of Durban in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, the mill is one of the production facilities for Sappi Specialised Cellulose. The mill has the capacity to produce approximately 800, 000 tons of elemental chlorine free (ECF) dissolving wood pulp (DWP) per annum, mostly for the export market. Dissolving wood pulp (DWP) is sold to converters to manufacture a wide range of consumer products, but in particular for viscose staple fibre (VSF) used in clothing and textiles. The Mondi Merebank Mill produces a range of office paper including the premium South African brand, Mondi Rotatrim. Mondi Shanduka Newsprint (MSN) is also housed in Merebank, and produces newsprint and telephone directory paper, primarily for the South African market. The mill recently commissioned a new state-of-the-art paper machine (PM31) . This project has enabled the mill to generate an additional 265 000 tons a year of mostly A4 office paper, destined for export markets. Tied in with the PM31 project is a new 14 pocket A4 cutting line, one of the world's largest and fastest in operation. It has a daily capacity of 600 tons and produces up to 210 reams per minute. All the investments connected with the PM31 projects also contributed to further improvements in environmental performance at the mill, as a result of the advanced technology used throughout.
