The South African manufacturing sector is in a de-industrialisation phase with the sector's contribution to gross domestic product dropping from 24% in the early 1980s to 13. 7% in 2015. The number of people employed in the sector has dropped by more than 25% over the same period.

The CSIR Implementation Unit supports government and industry by taking many of the technologies and processes developed in the CSIR (and elsewhere) to create impact in the broader South Africa. These initiatives aim to stimulate industrial development and economic growth, create jobs, and provide assistance to government to achieve its mandated responsibilities. The unit has a sound track record of taking programmes from policy to strategy and to implementation.
