Credo Mutwa Cultural Village
Majoeng Street, Jabavu, Soweto, South Africa
Located in the heart of Soweto, the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village contains a remarkable collection of sculptures and buildings. The village offers an outdoor museum of African art, culture and folklore, with sculptures of human and animal figures and dwellings drawn from a variety of African building styles. Created by artist, author and traditional healer Credo Mutwa over a ten year-period starting in 1974, the village serves to highlight the role played by traditional culture within an urban environment which is part-African and part-westernised. The sculpture garden lies below the historic Oppenheimer Tower, which affords a panoramic view of Soweto. The Oppenheimer Tower and cultural village are located in the Oppenheimer Gardens, a public park with indigenous plants.
