The Mondi Merebank Mill produces a range of office paper including the premium South African brand, Mondi Rotatrim. Mondi Shanduka Newsprint (MSN) is also housed in Merebank, and produces newsprint and telephone directory paper, primarily for the South African market. The mill recently commissioned a new state-of-the-art paper machine (PM31) . This project has enabled the mill to generate an additional 265 000 tons a year of mostly A4 office paper, destined for export markets. Tied in with the PM31 project is a new 14 pocket A4 cutting line, one of the world's largest and fastest in operation. It has a daily capacity of 600 tons and produces up to 210 reams per minute.   • Sappi - Tugela Mill

    Tugela Mill has been in operation since 1945 and is currently the oldest purpose-built mill in the Sappi group. The mill produces pulp for its own consumption, containerboard and lignosulphonate for export. Situated in the town of Mandeni near the Tugela river in KwaZulu-Natal, the mill is located near the ports of Richards Bay and Durban (South Africa), allowing for easy access to global markets. Our emphasis at the mill is on satisfying customer needs through high levels of quality and process as well as equipment optimisation. We produce 135, 000tpa of neutral sulfite semi-chemical pulp for own consumption and with a capacity of 195, 000tpa, the no 2 paper machine produces a range of Ultraflute and Ultratest corrugating medium (liner) manufactured from recycled and virgin fibre. Established in 2012, Tugela Mill joined Sappi Biotech as a source of lignosulphonate, producing 25, 000tpa of lignosulphonate in powder form and 35, 000tpa of liquid product.

  • Sappi - Stanger Mill

    Stanger Mill is unique in South Africa in that it uses bagasse as its basic raw material in the manufacture of office paper and tissue wadding. Situated along the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the mill is ideally situated to take advantage of the ready supply of bagasse from the neighbouring Gledhow Sugar Company. The technology of pulp and paper manufacturing is dynamic and continually advancing as there are demands placed upon paper end-users. In order to satisfy the demand for good quality paper made with care for the environment, we continually assess our manufacturing processes and manage product development based on market demands and industry trends. The mill's paper machine has a production capacity of 80, 000 tons, while the tissue machine produces around 30, 000 tons per annum. It also produces 60, 000 tons of bleached bagasse pulp for its own consumption per annum.
