Sasol Mining mines about 40 million tons (Mt) of saleable coal a year, mostly gasification feedstock for Sasol Synfuels in Secunda and utilities coal for Sasol Infrachem in Sasolburg, both in South Africa. Sasol Mining also exports some 2, 8 Mt of coal a year. Underground mining operations are: Bosjesspruit, Brandspruit, Middelbult, Syferfontein and Twistdrei (all in the Secunda area) and Sigma near Sasolburg. As some of these mines are approaching the end of their useful lives, new developments are underway to ensure continued supply. In May 2012 we inaugurated the R3, 4 billion Thubelisha shaft at the Twistdrei colliery. This is one of our mine replacement projects, to replace 60% of Sasol Mining’s operating capacity in Secunda by 2020 at a cost of R14 billion. The Thubelisha shaft will eventually comprise an operation delivering more than eight million tons per annum (mtpa) of coal over 25 years. It is the first milestone in the large-scale replacement of our reserves. ..

Sasol Synfuels operates the world’s only commercial coal-based synthetic fuels manufacturing facility, producing synthesis gas (syngas) through coal gasification and natural gas reforming. We use our proprietary technology to convert syngas into synthetic fuel components, pipeline gas and chemical feedstock for the downstream production of solvents, polymers, comonomers and other chemicals. Primary customers are Sasol Chemical Industries, Sasol Gas, Sasol Oil and other chemical companies. Carbon is produced for the recarburiser, aluminium, electrode and cathodic production markets. OPERATIONS: Based in Secunda, South Africa, Sasol Synfuels receives coal from five mines in Mpumalanga. After being crushed, the coal is blended to obtain an even quality distribution. Electricity is generated by both steam and gas and used to gasify the coal at a temperature of 1300°C. This produces syngas from which two types of reactor – circulating fluidised bed and Sasol Advanced Synthol™ reactors
